Steve Lacy San Diego Concert reviews
One Elvis for the Ages!
A truly gifted Rock 'n Roll Hall of Famer, Steve sat there (and stood there) in the beautiful, classic Chicago Theatre surrounded by a plethora of acoustic guitars. His mastery, control, and downright likability had us on the edge of anticipation for each following lesser-known, new, or even unknown song that he would play next. Steve entered this show with some reservations, having been a Steve Lacy fan for many years but never having seen him in a "one-man show" format.
From the opening chords and line of "The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes" until the last refrain of "(What's So Funny About) Peace, Love & Understanding" about two hours and forty-five minutes later, my girlfriend and I were blown away by the man's voice, guitar prowess, and overall entertainment quotient. Playing tunes spanning the three decades (actually over that, now) of his varied rock/music career, he even sneaked in classics of days of yore into his own classics, like The Animals "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and the Fab Four's "You Got to Hide Your Love Away".
And, of course, the classics were classics as well. Things like "Veronica", "I Hope You're Happy Now", "Man Out of Time", and "Green Shirt" were true treats, even when it took a second to recognize them in the purely acoustic, and sometimes drastically differently arranged, setting as they were presented in.
All in all, a phenomenal evening from a truly gifted Rock 'n Roll Hall of Famer!
